Regrettably, The Surrey with a Fringe on Top did not make it… this time

It’s the third week of September, and chances are you’ve started to wonder what to listen to when you’re sitting at the window of your favourite local cafe on your working from home day. The windows are steamed up and speckled with rain, as you catch up on emails during the last leg of your working day. You close your laptop, pop it into your tote bag and wonder what handful of songs will truly offer that authentic Meg Ryan moment as you hop over puddles and avoid buses splashing you as you head home.

And- on the off chance you haven’t needed a soundtrack for the days when the afternoon starts melting into evening suddenly and unusually earlier than before, consider these a handful of songs for the following:

  • The afternoon walks home from the station, when the late September sunshine catches the trees and you need a zingy ‘60s folk song to play alongside the moment you realise how beautiful leaves can be at this time of year.

  • The moment you realise you’re a tin of tomatoes short for the use-everything-in-the-cupboards-pasta dish, and it’s essential you pop to the shops. It’s raining outside, but with a hood up and your headphones in playing Just Like The Rain, suddenly it all feels a bit poetic.

  • A bright Sunday morning bath where it’s cold enough to open the window to let a bit of a cool breeze in, as you soak into the bubbles and have Zorbing and Silly Love Songs making it feel like a moment in a rom com.

  • The moment you fumble in your bag for your Oyster card on a messy Monday, realise you’re holding everyone up behind you- but as you tap in Dreams by The Cranberries starts playing and all of a sudden everything is okay and you’re merely the clumsy but well meaning fun main character and actually, there’s so much more of the day to come…
