Diary Of A Sentimental Heart: Part 1.
Gloria Gaynor was right*- and other notes on surviving heartbreak, sharing online and when to change the radio station...
A couple of years ago I went through a big break up.
Saying that feels a little bit teenage because although it’s true, my marriage ended- which somehow feels like it carries a different kind of weight to it. I’ve given it the ‘soft touch’ online; addressing it delicately in a way that felt appropriate, careful and right for my ex and I, as if talking about it too much could break something that had already happened. If I could write it again (it being ‘the internet announcement post’ that happened a few months into our decision and felt almost obligatory given a life shared online), I’d probably aim to recreate (or do a terrible copy and paste job) of Jo’s personal news post. I feel like everything she says fully embodies everything I wish I could articulate and more- with regards to her marriage, their parenting and navigating things going forward. But however you play it- going through something of such enormity in a public sphere (and one you’ve created yourself) is a complicated thing.
